Foamy Water: What Causes It?

Foam can occasionally appear in a hot tub. While it’s generally not harmful, it looks unpleasant and prevents the water from being crystal clear. Understanding what causes foam and how to prevent it can help you maintain a clean, inviting hot tub.

Common Causes of Foaming:

1. Old Water: Over time, dissolved products and total dissolved solids (TDS) can build up in the water. When the jets are turned on, this can create foam. The solution is to drain and replace the water regularly to prevent it from becoming “stale.”

2. Introduction of Unwanted Products: Foam can also result from soaps, shampoo, conditioners, make-up, or residues on swimwear. Even a small amount can cause foaming. To reduce this, ask bathers to shower before using the hot tub and ensure swimsuits are thoroughly rinsed after washing.

3. Low Calcium Levels: Soft water tends to foam more readily due to lower surface tension. Filling a hot tub with softened water is not recommended, as low calcium can also harm hot tub fittings. In soft water areas, check calcium hardness weekly and consider adjusting if levels remain below recommended values. Soft water tends to foam more readily due to lower surface tension.

4. Poor Water Quality: Water that is poorly maintained - low disinfectant, incorrect pH, or out of balance can encourage foaming and produce unpleasant odors. Regular testing with a reliable kit ensures water remains within safe and comfortable levels.

If foaming persists, non-chlorine shock treatments can help restore water quality by breaking down body oils, lotions, and other organic materials. Defoamers are also available, but should be purchased from reputable suppliers.

By maintaining good water quality and addressing these causes, you can keep your hot tub water clear, comfortable, and foam-free.
