Keep Testing – Keep Control – Keep Safe

What’s Lurking In Your Filter? (Maybe more than you think!)

All hot tubs have some form of filtration system usually based on cartridge filters. All the water in the tubs will pass through the filter at some point and removing any impurities. Over time, the filter will become dirty and they do need cleaning regularly. Unfortunately, this can happen quicker than you think and therefore the filter should be checked frequently.

Even if you are just hiring a hot tub for a weekend, it is still advisable to check the filter condition regularly. With heavy use a filter can become clogged very quickly with grass, dirt, cosmetics etc and its appearance can be very off putting. When this happens the filter performance is compromised, the water flow through reduces and it can become a haven for biofilms. If the later happen this will mean more chemical are needed as they try to combat the contamination and in turn, this could mean a gross bacterial infestation of the hot tub!

Clean Filter:

Normally white

Each fold nicely divided

No contamination

    Dirty Filter:

    Dirty colour
    Folds can be ‘stuck’ together

    Contamination

    Slimy feel if Biofilms present

If the filter is dirty, it should be removed and cleaned immediately. Leaving a dirty filter to fester in the tub will only lead to water problems. When cleaning always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and follow the necessary safety precautions. Ideally, it is best to have a spare set of filters. These can be used straight away whilst the other set is being cleaned and dried thus minimising down time.

Good water quality will help prolong filter life especially if sanitiser (chlorine or bromine) and pH levels are kept correct. If levels are ideal, any potentially harmful bacteria will be ‘killed’ immediately and the potential of biofilm formation will be reduced. To ensure levels are correct regular testing should be carried out. It is recommended that the water is tested each day before use.
