Correct pH - What's the point?
A very good question and one that isn’t fully understood.
The pH level in a pool or hot tub shows how acidic and alkaline the water is but why is it important? We know all you really want to do is relax in your tub with perhaps a nice cool drink and some soothing background music. The last thing you want to be doing is faffing around testing the water but it is essential – why is it so important especially the pH?
Firstly, it is best to measure free chlorine and pH at the same time. These are the most important tests as they are about user safety.
So chlorine is the disinfectant but why pH?
High pH levels - Being within a pool or hot tub with a pH level less than 7 would be like getting shampoo in your eyes, you can also find your skin becoming red and itchy.
Low pH levels - With a pH level higher than 7, you can find yourself in a situation where water becomes cloudy and bacteria in the water is not properly dealt with. It can also cause issues with the plumbing equipment in both a pool and hot tub.

Ideally the level should be between 7.0-7.6 as above 7.6 the the efficiency of chlorine as disinfectant reduces rapidly. See table below. Below 7.0, the water falls on to the acidic side, which is not good for the bather comfort or pool and hot tub fittings.
Graph Showing how chlorine efficiency drops as pH rises. Therefore, pH is important and regular testing and control is essential.
